As I was preparing a speech for my Toastmasters club on negotiation, I realized that a win-win negotiation is fully grounded on one thing…attitude. The old saying, “You can catch more flies with honey than you can with vinegar” is so true!
Do you remember the Golden Rule? “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” It’s one of the first things we try to teach our children, but forget to apply to ourselves! Sometimes our attitudes stink, and if we trace the smell, it usually leads back to selfishness.
So let’s say you’re negotiating to buy a car. You want a fair deal but the seller wants a fair deal also. Let’s apply the Golden Rule! Check our attitude. Is it one of fairness or greed?
