Sufficient Courage

October 15, 2015 — Leave a comment

Have you ever been afraid of something?  You needed courage…but didn’t know where to find it.  God’s word gives us the answers we need to get us through any situation.

Courage is for anything you absolutely do NOT want to do…or scared to do; Paul was in prison and DID NOT WANT TO BE THERE, but simply needed sufficient courage for right then!

“Yes, and I will continue to rejoice, for I know that through your prayers and the help given by the Spirit of Jesus Christ, what has happened to me will turn out for my deliverance. I eagerly expect and hope that I will in no way be ashamed, but will have sufficient courage so that now as always Christ will be exalted in my body, whether by life or by death.” (Philippians 1:19-20, NIV)

Fear goes exactly where we tell it to go!  We can move fear from the back of our minds to the front with one swift thought! We shift our concentration away from our courage by focusing on what is frightening us.  Therefore,…strengthening the fear.

Stop it!!  Choose to push through the fear…”Sufficient Courage.”

Sufficient:  ample, enough, plenty.  Courage:  bravery, guts, nerve, daring…

God will give you just what you need at that very moment!  “I can do all things through Christ which strengthens me.” (Philippians 4:13, KJV)

Those self-imposed barriers are broken and you begin to grow in His strength!  “The Lord himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you.  Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged.” (Deuteronomy 31:8, NIV

Cling to the word and Gods promise and reward.  (Psalms 119:116, Romans 14:8, I Corinthians 6:20, 2 Corinthians 3:12 and 7:4, I Peter 4:16)

“Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes.  For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.  Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand.  Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, and with your feet fitted with the readiness that come from the gospel of peace,.. In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one.  Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.” (Ephesians 6:11-17, NIV)

Our life is going to be full of challenges and obstacles.  In Ephesians 6, Paul tells us the real battle is in the Spiritual realm.  We can’t rely on our own strength or we will be defeated.

“Wisdom Walks”  by Dan Britton & Jimmy Page, breaks it down like this.

    • Expect it… “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace.  In this world you will have trouble.  But take heart!  I have overcome the world. (John 16:33, NIV)
    • Be true…the Belt of Truth:  This holds all the other parts together and you’ll want to practice integrity and not be looking over your shoulder all the time waiting for a lie to catch up with you.
    • Be right…The Breastplate of Righteousness: True righteousness comes when your heart is made right through faith in Christ Jesus.  Asking forgiveness for sin everyday keep that protection in place.
    • Be ready…your feet fitted with readiness: Be ready to share the gospel, your faith in Christ!
    • Be sure…The Shield of Faith:  Faith protects you from the devil.  You’ll use anything and everything to trip you up.
    • Be smart…the Helmet of Salvation:  The helmet protects your mind.  “Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.”  (Romans 12:2, NIV).  When you meditate on His word and put it into action it easier to have a positive attitude.
    • Be skilled…The Sword of the Spirit:  When you know the word of God he will bring those verses to mind when you need them most.
