Hold that Tongue!

January 24, 2017 — Leave a comment

Once I saw somebody just chewing out a man like crazy.  I don’t have any idea what the problem was, but I remember thinking, “That’s probably somebody’s dad.”  And then I wondered how I would feel if somebody talked to my dad with total disrespect.

Here’s what the Bible says in 1 Thessalonians 5:15 (NIV).  Paul was addressing the church in Thessalonica. “Make sure that nobody pays back wrong for wrong, but always try to be kind to each other and to everyone else.”

That sounds like a pretty tall order.  The world tells you to get even, but God tells you to be kind.  If you are a Christian, I hope you make a practice of being kind.  Sometimes it’s VERY difficult to do, but God always seems to know the better way!   Just the other day, I was having problems with a coworker when Debra reminded me, “Pray for them right now!”  Now that will change your attitude!  Gwen~

I was standing in the front yard talking with a neighbor when suddenly she began to choke!

I was very concerned and wondered what in the world.  After several minutes she was able to talk and explained a small bug had gone down her throat.

I asked if she was ok, then we hear someone laughing!  Hysterically in fact!

That someone…her husband!  I was so surprised at his reaction I just stared, dumbfounded.  I looked back to her and saw her giving him the look of death!  Between squeals of laughter…he stated:  “‘I’ve told you a hundred times to keep your mouth shut!!”

Now her husband was teasing of course, but how many times have you wished you could take something back you’ve said? Some thing you really should have thought through.  The book of James talks about this very thing!

Like-wise the tongue is a small part of the body, but it makes great boast.  Consider what a great forest is set on fire by a small spark.  The tongue also is a fire, a world of evil among the parts of the body.  It corrupts the whole person, sets the whole course of his life on fire, and is itself set on fire by hell.”(James 3:5-6, NIV)

“With the tongue we praise our Lord and Father, and with it we curse men who have been made in God’s likeness.  Out of the same mouth come praise and cursing.  My brothers, this should not be.” (James 3:9-10, NIV)

Love Heart,  I want to challenge you to meditate on James 3 and start holding your tongue!  Deb

Do you know what one of the worst things you can lose is?  Your temper!  Oh my goodness.  Once it’s lost, there’s no getting it back.

The words have spewed out of your mouth like water out of a New York City fire hydrant.

The damage is done.  There’s no taking it back – sorta like toothpaste out of a tube.     Now that you’ve blown up, what is it, exactly, that you’ve accomplished?           Whatever it is, it’s probably not what you wanted.  Now someone else is hurt as your words have cut to their soul.  It’s a mess!

I wish I could claim to be guilt free in this area, but I’m afraid I’m not.  And to add to the horror, the madder I get, the louder I get, until I’m waaaaay off!  Do I ever intentionally want to hurt whoever it is that I’m in conflict with?  No.  Am I trying to make them see things my way?  Yes.

So, it’s time for me to grow up.  In fact, whomever it is that I’m “talking” to will probably be more willing to see my side if I control that tongue of mine!  The next time your frustration level is on the rise, THINK.  Get ready for a conversation, not a screaming match!

Remember about how evil the tongue is?  Look how much better this is. 2 Samuel 23:2 says, “The Spirit of the LORD spoke through me; his word was on my tongue.”  How much better to have the word of the Lord on your tongue than evil!

Love Heart, you pray for me and I will pray for you, and the Lord will be the master of our tongue!  Gwen~

Bite your Tongue!

The tongue is such a small little thing compared to other parts of the body.  It’s very sensitive to things like heat or too much salt, and it can let your brain know just how good that chocolate ice cream is!  But it can also be a writhing, vicious source of evil.

Proverbs 18:21a (NIV) says, “The tongue has the power of life and death.”  In James 3, scripture calls the tongue “a world of evil among the parts of the body” and goes on to say, “No man can tame the tongue.   It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison.”  One word from the Commander In Chief and our country is at war.  One decision, one word from a scared teenager and a preborn baby is destroyed.

What about the “life” side of the coin?  Praise!  Praise to the Lord, praise to the struggling student, praise to new mom whose trying to figure things out.  Comfort!  The tongue can speak a word of comfort to those who have lost, those who are at their wit’s end, those who are afraid.  Encouragement!  It can speak a word of encouragement to the one who’s trying to make an important decision, who is still searching for a job, who is struggling with an addiction.

So what do you do?  Be aware that it can get away from you quickly and stir up evil or it can bring peace.  Dedicate your tongue to the Lord.  Ask Him to tame it for you and use it for His glory!  Gwen~
